The new Archaeological Museum of Chania is perhaps the largest and most important project primarily for the cultural and touristic development of Chania, which will greatly contribute to the promotion of the district of Halepa with its dozens of neoclassical mansions that are also monuments of the latest history of the place.
The total area of the building will be 5,656.13 square meters and in addition to the exhibition space, in the new museum, rooms will also be built to house the administrative offices, warehouses, maintenance laboratories and an auditorium, while in the courtyard, it is planned to a total of eighty one parking spaces will be created.
The Museum will be built on the free space of the former Hatzidakis camp in Halepa, based on the study of the famous architect Theofanis Bobotis. The total area of 5,230 square meters includes large exhibition spaces with an area of 1,800 square meters, while also planned is a room for periodic exhibitions, a room for lectures and educational programs, an auditorium with 140 seats, a dining area, a bookstore, workshops and warehouses. It is worth noting that the Bobotis study had attracted very positive comments both in Greece and abroad.
The New Archaeological Museum of Chania has joined the Operational Program "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship" of the NSRF 2007-2013 with a budget of €17,985,000. The project was contracted on 3.4.2012 with the amount of €9,176,716.60. The costs amount to €4,329,629.54, i.e. it concerns 48% of the contractual object.
Also, the implementing body which is the Directorate for the Execution of Museums and Cultural Buildings Projects of the Ministry of Education and Culture. also manages Sub-Project 2 "Connection of a building with Public Welfare Organisations", with a budget of €150,000.00.
To the implementing body after the increase of the payment limit by the P.D.E. the amount of €1,000,000.00 has been allocated for the 3rd Quarter of 2014, an amount which exceeds the submitted accounts.
Also, in the implementation stage is the project "Preparation of a study of a permanent exhibition and equipment of the Archaeological Museum of Chania - Organization of a periodic exhibition "The Archaeological Museum of Chania from the 19th to the 21st century: an adventurous course in space and time". The project was included on 6.12.2013 in the Operational Program "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship" of the NSRF 2007-2013, with the implementing body the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania and a budget of €820,000.00.
The implementation of the permanent exhibition, the configuration of the surrounding area and the completion of the amphitheater will be financed from the next Programming Period 2014-2020. A relevant consultation has already been made with the Region of Crete.
In any case, the 2 projects that have been included in the current Programming Period in the Operational Program "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship" of the NSRF 2007-2013, make the New Archaeological Museum of Chania fully operational.
In the context of the NSRF 2007-2013, the construction of the New Archaeological Museum of Chania was included in the Operational Program Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship (EPAN II) with a budget of €9,866,177.00 and was completed within the framework of the PEP of Crete as an ongoing project during the NSRF 2014 period - 2020.
Also included in the framework of EPAN II was the project of preparing a study for a permanent exhibition and equipping the Archaeological Museum of Chania - Organization of a periodical exhibition "The Archaeological Museum of Chania from the 19th to the 21st century: an adventurous course in space and time" with an inclusion budget of 820,000, €00.
With the completion of these two projects, the New Archaeological Museum of Chania became complete and fully operational.
The creation of the New Archaeological Museum of Chania was included in the Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship Operational Program (EPAN II) within the NSRF 2007-2013 and was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and by national resources.
